2010-11-1  In order to mitigate such visual intrusion, it has been proposed that rehabilitation of limestone quarries should aim at “replicating” karst landforms, i.e. to mimic natural appearance by replacing straight lines and other engineered features by rock headwalls, buttresses and other karst landscape features (Gagen and Gunn, 1988, Gunn and Bailey, 1993) in areas of outstanding natural beauty or where

Quarry rehabilitation: a case study WIT Press

2014-5-15  reclamation project was conducted in a limestone quarry within the Serra da Arribida Natural Park (Portugal), one example of well-preserved Mediterranean vegetation in Europe. We compared the revegetation of 5 abandoned platforms sequentially revegetated over the last 15 years, at 3 year intervals. The successive revegetation of each platform resulted in distinct plant communities, differing in age and cover. This allowed the evaluation of establishment and growth of introduced species as well as the succession of spontaneous species and stabilisation of natural vegetation. The evolution of soil characteristics was also evaluated as well as the contribution of different species to soil formation on the platforms. The results obtained allowed us to recommend strategies and to establish criteria for evaluation of the success of the revegetation

2019-3-1  Limestone deposit is covered by a 50–70 m thick layer of soil–clayey sand and clay–which has to be removed by means of excavators/shovels and chain bucket excavator. Material must then be disposed in a nearby exhausted multiple-bench open pit partially flooded, with groundwater level expected to raise in the next years (see Fig. 4).
